Romance scams are big business and they’re getting bigger. A record $547 million was stolen by fake cyber suitors in 2021 according to the FTC, an increase of nearly 80 percent over 2020. And that’s only the cases that were reported. Many would-be lovers who fall for a catfish scam never report the crime.
It’s never been easier to assume a fake identity, create a convincing online dating profile and wait for would-be victims to come your way. This week’s guest was one such target. Fortunately, she was savvy enough to smell a catfish from a mile away.
