Darkside Ransomware

As ransomware gangs ratcheted up their campaigns in 2021 (according to some estimates by as much as 50 percent), one of the most infamous was the Eastern European cybergang known as Darkside.

Darkside and its network of affiliates were responsible for the most high-profile ransomware incidents of 2021, including the Colonial Pipeline hack that disrupted the fuel supply to nearly half of the U.S. East Coast. The group was estimated to have collected over $90 million in ransom payments from at least 47 victims.

This week’s guest on What the Hack with Adam Levin is a cybersecurity and I.T. professional who was tasked with protecting one of Darkside’s targets. Instead of paying a hefty ransom, he and his colleagues successfully contained the damage to their networks and basically saved the day.

Listen to this week’s episode to find out how ransomware gangs operate and communicate with their targets, and how to defend against them.
